The redevelopment of the square and the Trident marks a step towards the revitalisation of an area that lost its original function following its division between two countries. The central concept of the design is to bring together two important spatial axes that intersect at the square. Running east–west is the urban axis connecting the two towns, while the north–south axis follows the green border zone. Each provides a distinct spatial quality; through their interweaving, the square becomes a multifunctional public space that brings together the urban and the natural.

The traffic redesign has freed the public spaces from parked vehicles while slowing down and restricting motorised traffic. The long-term vision for the area envisages the complete removal of motorised traffic.
