The client’s brief called for an extension of the open, covered spaces used for funeral ceremonies. These are arranged as a continuation of the existing mortuary building, whose semicircular layout opens towards the north along the axis of the church. The architectural design responds to the spatial characteristics of the site and the design of the existing building.
The project comprises two separate canopies that preserve unobstructed views towards the church while providing shelter and shade. Their height is aligned with that of the existing building. Rather than enclosing the space, the canopies allow it to extend beyond their physical boundaries.
The slender white steel column structure is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible and derives from the collonaded loggia of the existing building.
The smaller canopy—a lightweight baldachin—covers part of the existing steps and provides shelter for the funeral officiant and the coffin or urn. The larger canopy is intended for the other participants in the ceremony and, in plan, continues the circular line of the existing building’s roof.
